HS 0812 covers fruit and nuts provisionally preserved, for example in brine or sulphur water, but unfit for immediate consumption. In 2025, Japan (USD 31.7 million), Italy (USD 21.4 million) and Austria (USD 17.7 million) lead the imports declared to UN Comtrade among the markets listed. For an exporter from Spain, the subheading decides tariff and requirements.

What to know before exporting HS 0812

Heading 0812 sits in chapter 08 of the Harmonized System and has three subheadings. It groups fruit and nuts that have been preserved only temporarily, so that they can travel or be stored, and that need further processing before being eaten. Product that is ready to eat usually falls under other headings, so the classification of each shipment has to be checked against its actual state.

The importing markets are spread across several regions. The table above shows Japan, Italy, Austria and the United Kingdom at the top, with Asian, European and American buyers further down. These figures are imports declared by each country from the world, not purchases from Spain, so they show where demand exists but not how open each market is to a Spanish supplier.

For a company exporting from Spain, the tariff depends on three things: the six-digit subheading, the destination country and the trade agreement in force between the EU and that destination. It is consulted by destination and product code in Access2Markets, the European Commission tool for exporters. Do not take a tariff from a general table without checking the subheading.

Entry requirements work the same way. Phytosanitary rules, labelling, documentary checks and rules of origin vary by destination and can change. Access2Markets lists them for each country and product. Before quoting a price, confirm them for the exact eight- or ten-digit code that the importer will use at customs.

The most useful first step is to pick one or two markets from the table and check, for each, the subheading, the tariff and the requirements. Italy and Austria are EU members, so the shipment moves within the single market. Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States are third countries and involve customs formalities. Most of the other markets in the table also require customs clearance.

Frequently asked questions

What products fall under HS 0812?

HS 0812 covers fruit and nuts provisionally preserved, for example in brine, sulphur water or other preservative solutions, but unsuitable in that state for immediate consumption. It has three subheadings and belongs to chapter 08. The exact subheading depends on the fruit and on how it is preserved.

Which markets import the most under HS 0812?

In 2025, among the markets listed in UN Comtrade data, Japan declared the highest imports with USD 31.7 million, followed by Italy with USD 21.4 million and Austria with USD 17.7 million. These are imports from the world, not from Spain. Countries report with a delay, so the latest consolidated year may change.

What tariff will my HS 0812 shipment pay?

It depends on the subheading, the destination country and the trade agreement between the EU and that country. A company exporting from Spain can look it up by product and destination in Access2Markets. For shipments within the EU there is no customs duty, although the usual tax and documentary obligations still apply.

Do I need special certificates to export fruit under HS 0812?

It depends on the destination and the product. Phytosanitary, labelling and documentary requirements are set by each importing country and can change. Access2Markets lists the requirements by country and product code, and the importer's customs agent can confirm what applies at the border.

Does being a top importer mean it is an easy market for a Spanish exporter?

No. The volume shows demand, not accessibility. Tariffs, agreements, requirements and competition from other suppliers differ in each market. Check them for your subheading before deciding where to start.
