What to know before exporting wine and spirits to Germany from Spain

Check the dates first. The fact sheet on this page has no confirmed date for the next edition. The organiser publishes them on the official ProWein website, and that is the only source to rely on for booking a stand, flights and hotels.

Selling from Spain to Germany is an intra-EU operation. For a company exporting from Spain, there are no customs duties on goods moving to Germany, so the tariff is not the variable to optimise. The costs and obligations that matter are tax and administrative ones.

Alcohol carries excise duty, and it depends on the product. Wine, sparkling wine and spirits are taxed differently, and the duty is paid in the country of consumption. Goods moving between member states under duty suspension need an electronic excise document. Your tax adviser or the AEAT can confirm the procedure for your product and your authorisation status as a producer or warehousekeeper.

VAT follows the intra-community rules. The treatment differs depending on whether the buyer is a VAT-registered business or a private individual, and on whether you hold a German VAT registration. At a trade fair, where the buyers are professionals, the first case is the usual one, but it should be confirmed with your adviser before invoicing.

The market data support the visit. In the table above, beverages, spirits and vinegar (chapter 22) rank fourth by import value among the food and drink chapters shown for Germany in 2025. The table covers the whole chapter, not wine alone, so use it as a measure of market size and not as a forecast for a specific product.

Samples shipped to the fair are also subject to the rules. Sending bottles for tastings is not exempt from excise and labelling checks just because they are samples. Ask your carrier and your tax adviser how to document them before shipping.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next ProWein Düsseldorf?

No date is published in the fact sheet on this page. The organiser, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, announces the dates of each annual edition on the official ProWein website, www.prowein.com. Check it before committing to travel or stand costs.

Do I pay customs duties when selling wine from Spain to Germany?

No. Spain and Germany are both EU member states, so goods move between them without customs duties. Excise duty on alcohol and VAT still apply under their own rules, and they depend on the product and on the buyer.

Is excise duty paid in Spain or in Germany?

For goods sold to a buyer in Germany, excise is generally due in the country where the goods are consumed. How it is handled depends on whether the goods travel under duty suspension and on your authorisation status. The AEAT and your tax adviser can confirm the procedure for your case.

How big is the German market for beverages and spirits?

Germany declared USD 10.26 billion of imports in HS chapter 22 (beverages, spirits and vinegar) in 2025, according to UN Comtrade. The figure covers the whole chapter and all origins, so it measures market size, not demand for a specific wine or category.

What is exhibited at ProWein?

Wines and spirits on an international B2B platform. According to the organiser's description, categories also include sparkling wines, alcohol-free wines and innovative beverages.
