The US Trade Representative (USTR) is asking for public comments on the operation of the USMCA ahead of the 2027 joint review. The deadline to send them, and to request to speak at the public hearing, is 12 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. US Eastern time. It matters to anyone exporting from Mexico, selling to Mexican customers who manufacture for North America, or producing with inputs from the region.

What the US has asked for
On 2 October 2026 the USTR announced that, as directed by Congress, it is seeking public comments on the operation of the USMCA, the trade agreement between Mexico, the US and Canada. It is the consultation ahead of the 2027 joint review. The statement does not say in which month the review is held.
The official notice, titled "Request for Public Comments and Notice of Public Hearing Relating to the Operation of the Agreement", appears in the Federal Register as document 2026-20341, published on 5 October 2026.

Deadlines and dockets
Written comments are sent through docket USTR-2026-0595 until 12 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. US Eastern time.
Anyone who wants to speak at the public hearing must request it, with a summary of their testimony, through docket USTR-2026-0596 by the same date and time. The USTR will publish the day and place of the hearing on its website; they are not yet set out.
Each docket is separate: sending a comment does not register anyone for the hearing.

Who it matters to
It matters mostly to those exporting from Mexico to the US or Canada, those manufacturing with inputs from the region and those selling to Mexican customers who produce for the North American market. Rules of origin, tariffs and customs procedures are what usually come up in a review.
For a company exporting from Spain to Mexico, the agreement between the EU and Mexico applies, not the USMCA. The USMCA may affect the demand of its Mexican customers indirectly, which is why it is worth following the review.
