VAT number validator against the VIES register
Check in the European Union’s official register whether your customer’s VAT number is registered, and keep the date of the check.
In an intra-Community supply, your customer’s number being registered in VIES on the day of the transaction is not paperwork: it is the condition for not charging VAT. If it is not, you end up paying the VAT yourself, and you find out in an audit two years later, when there is nobody left to charge it to. Which is why what matters is not only the yes or the no, but being able to show you checked before invoicing: the date appears next to the result.
Real-time query against the European Commission’s VIES register. No result is stored: a number can be deregistered today, and what counts is its status on the day of the transaction. Spain, Germany and Italy do not publish the registered name even when the number is valid; a blank there is not a failure. If the register does not answer, we say so: that is not the same as the number not existing.
