The most widespread fraud in international trade is not the fake customer: it is the email, sent from an address almost identical to the usual one, announcing a change of bank account in the middle of a real transaction. Checking the IBAN rules out hand-invented numbers in two seconds. What it does not rule out is everything else, which is why there is a warning under the result worth reading.
A correct IBAN does not tell you whose account it is. If bank details change by email, confirm it by phone on a number you already had.
The check is the standard one: country code, country length and the modulo 97 check digits. It runs entirely in your browser and the number is not sent anywhere. A valid IBAN does not mean the account exists or whose it is: if bank details change, confirm it by phone on a number you already had before the message.
